Admit One - Homebound

Melbourne pop punks ADMIT-ONE have a lot going for them: cool songs, catchy hooks, a suitably snotty-nosed attitude, and some bright prospects with some industry insiders getting behind the band in a big way.

What they are lacking, though, is a real point of difference to make them stand out from any other snotty-nosed ‘tood, cool catchy song-wielding pop punk outfit.

Opener Sink In The Knife stands out on this four-track EP: it has all the elements to make a great song… apart from the fact that it could be from any of a dozen good bands. Turn Out The Lights’ chanted ‘woah’s over a memorable chorus give it a real stadium-filler feel.

I’m not meaning to be unfairly harsh here: I legitimately enjoyed Homebound. But, like MSG-rich Chinese food, it left me feeling unfulfilled and wanting something more substantial straight afterwards.

What Admit-One need is an edge: they have the chops to write the songs and deliver them with real conviction and class. Here’s hoping their next effort sees them developing a bit more of an individual style.
