Another new band from Melbourne, FEAR OF FLYING have delivered a solid opening salvo in this debut EP, but like many bands, their first release will likely be remembered for them trying to find their feet in the studio and as a step on the road towards developing their own style rather than a world-beating first splash.
One Fine Day opens the five tracker in dependable fashion, and instantly we can start to hear the influences this four-piece wear a little too openly. There’s shades of Foo Fighters, Something For Kate, Sunny Day Real Estate.
They’re All Nightmares is a much stronger – though less immediate – song. Give it a few listens to let the angsty melody and lyrics get under your skin, and you’ll reap the rewards. Even with the lyrical homage to The Police it still sounds like a solid Foo Fighters album track rather than a single, though.
The Last Minute sees singer Pete Broadway turning the heartbreak & pain up to eleven and really milking the Paul Dempsey-styled vocals; Dear Life doesn’t quite bring all of its ambitious elements together and sounds a little repetitious as a result; and similarly, closer Hibernate aims high for an arena-sized singalong anthem and falls a little short.
Fear Of Flying came close on this debut EP, delivering a good, solid introduction to the world. Odds on their next offering will show a bit more of their own personality and be a better record because of it.
