West Australian singer-songwriter Toby boasts a powerful voice that rings with hint of Melissa Etheridge or, at times, Toni Childs, but with more rootsy, earthy grit, and she complements it well with a knack for writing great, catchy melodies.
Nobody Told Me is an enjoyable listen from start to finish, with a couple of obvious standouts in Don’t Go’s perfect guitar pop, and Good Old Days, which boasts a clever lyric, ‘welcome back to the good old days’ and a Russian-polka-vibe. Its unusual melody ensures it makes a beeline straight to the memory banks.
The album finishes with a curio: a slow version of Don’t Go, which highlights what a change in arrangement can do. Where the former is jaunty fun, this take is a slow burn that showcases Toby’s vocals well, though she chose the better one to feature earlier on in the running order.
