With a deep bass groove and a garagey attitude, Perth’s Filthy Apes have delivered a great slab of raucous n’ roll for their debut single.
As singer Father Time spits “we’re gonna be just fine” the rest of the ape-faced band (Dr Zulu Love, Yakob Stonehenge and Phantom Boogey make up the numbers) create a groove that is part Stooges, part QOTSA and part who-the-hell-knows, to make a wall of sound with fists swinging.

Extra kudos for remembering that singles ALWAYS need a ‘b-side’, even if they’re on a CD or even digital. Here that song is Orange Juice, a track with a similarly dense vibe, but less vitriol in the vocals.
Filthy Apes remind us of some of the great indie rock that was bubbling up in the glory days of Triple J’s Hottest 100 – you know, the ‘90s, before that station started completely sucking. Regardless of your vintage, what we have here, folks, is a band who have just earned themselves a spot on the ‘Watch Closely’ list.
