NEWS: PAC-MAN FEVER IS BACK! “PAC-MAN FEVER (EAT ‘EM UP) 2015” SINGLE RELEASED
July 22, 2015 — Got a pocket full of quarters? Feel like heading to the Arcade? That’s because…“Pac-Man Fever” is back!
Just as the new film Pixels is set for release on July 24, the iconic million-selling song “Pac-Man Fever” by Buckner & Garcia is re-released, in a new incarnation. “Pac-Man Fever (Eat ‘Em Up) 2015” featuring Jace Hall was rushed to market to coincide with the film’s release and is available on the song’s official website, Amazon and Spotify, and will soon be up on all other digital retailers. “Pac-Man Fever (Eat ‘Em Up) 2015” follows in the tradition of the original “Pac-Man Fever,” which became an anthem for the video game generation and part of pop music culture.
Popmatters.com premiered a lyric video for the new version of the song today and can be seen here: http://bit.ly/1IkQxKO.
“‘Pac-Man Fever’ is either mentioned or played somewhere in the world every day,” declares Jerry Buckner. “…With recent sightings on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Today Show and at the end of the hilarious ‘Tweet Tweet’ skit on Jimmy Kimmel Live with Drake, and many more places. That says a lot for the staying power of Pac-Man Fever. We hope to continue that tradition with this latest version of the song.”
Struck by the emerging video game fad in 1981, keyboardist Jerry Buckner and guitarist Gary Garcia wrote and recorded “Pac-Man Fever” as a tribute to the popular video game and shopped it around to various major record labels. All the companies turned it down, but Arnie Geller heard something he liked and released it on his BGO Records. The song became an instant hit after airing on a local Akron, OH radio morning show. After selling more than 10,000 copies in its first week, the record shot up the national charts making its way to the Top 10 on Billboard’s “Hot 100” Singles Chart. The excitement created demand for an album, and Buckner & Garcia set about quickly learning every popular arcade game they could. The resulting album, Pac-Man Fever, was completed in just two weeks and became an instant sensation, selling over 2.5 million copies, and reaching #9 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart.
Subsequently, People magazine named “Pac-Man Fever” one of the top “pop cultural” events of all time. New interest in retro video games prompted the duo to re-record the Pac-Man Fever album. It was immediately embraced by fans and continues to sell worldwide.
The duo continued to make music together until the untimely loss of Gary Garcia in 2011. That same year, the full Pac-Man Fever album was made available to download on the Rock Band Network for play in the “Rock Band” video game.
