There’s not much Daniel Johns hasn’t done to step out of the shadow of progressive grunge rockers Silverchair: Celebrity marriage? Check. Celebrity divorce? Check. Anorexia? Check. Drug habits? Check. Wiggy Woo electro collaborations? Check. Generally odd behaviour? Check, check and check.
Putting all the attention-seeking behaviour aside and focussing on the music, a few things are glaringly obvious:
1. Daniel Johns is an extremely talented chap.
2. Daniel Johns is trying WAY too hard to prove that.
3. Daniel Johns is trying WAY too hard to create something that cannot be compared to his old band on any level, and in doing so Talk lacks any depth or soul.
4. These sorts of sub-Timberlake, OTT, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink productions will doubtless find a home amongst hipster kids not old enough to know better, but we are 100% ROCK and this 100% isn’t.
Some other stuff you might dig
