10 Quick Ones with WILL MOSS of LIFECURSE – May 2018

According to a recent press release: “Asheville, NC Metal band LIFECURSE has released the official music video for “BUZZARD BAIT,” off of their forthcoming album, The Wolf You Feed. Produced by Jamie King (Between the Buried and Me, For Today, The Contortionist, Scale the Summit), The Wolf You Feed is set to release mid-2018.” We get singer Will Moss to discuss new music, influences, and more in our 10 Quick Ones…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Our newest single “Buzzard Bait” is the first single off our 3rd LP titled The Wolf You Feed. Upon first listen, you’ll probably hear your standard metal distorted guitars, bass driven momentum, fast, loud and heavy drums, and all the screaming your heart can handle. What you won’t expect is the clean vocals and how they are done. The melody and style is something that sounds familiar but you can’t quite put your finger on. It’s the thing that really draws a new listener in and makes them want to dig a little deeper into the band.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

My parents actually. My father always had acoustic guitars and banjos and keyboards laying around and my mom insisted I take piano lessons as a kid, so I would go from football practice to piano lessons and it was weird as a kid lol. But I guess the thing that made me want to start playing music and be a musician was watching old Metallica VHS tapes and seeing Cliff Burton play the bass like no one else I had ever seen. Seeing him do all that in front of those massive crowds, I was just blown away and knew then and there that that is what I wanted to do. So my parents bought me a couple of different basses starting around 7th grade through high school until I got a job and started buying my own equipment. Eventually I realized that maybe that wasn’t what I was supposed to do so I started doing vocals for different local bands and I was just not terrible enough to get where I am today hahaha

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

• The Ghost Inside – Everything those guys have been through and continue to fight through is very influential and inspirational.
• Deftones – They truly set themselves apart and really transcended the genre.
• Sevendust – Another genre defining band that just carved their own path and had success their own way, while still sticking to their sound.
• Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails – I just love a self made musician. Everything he has done has been done well. Fought through depression, heavy drug addiction, and being suicidal to deliver some pretty timeless albums.
• Tool/MJK – This pretty much goes without saying for any vocalist. The guy is a legend.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

Believe it or not, I would want a Hip-Hop Artist/Producer to get on a track. G Yamazawa, Yelawolf, Tech 9ine, Rittz, Childish Gambino, Hopsin, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, The Roots, Method Man, Redman, just to name a few. I just love the vibe and atmosphere and culture of hip-hop. Where I grew up was dominated by rap & hip hop on the radio so I have always had an appreciation for the art when used to lift people up, not encourage them to tear others down.

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

Too metal to be rock but too rock to be metal haha

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Being able to create something out of nothing, out of a feeling or an emotion or just an idea in my brain and being able to give that to someone else in audio format is a pretty amazing thing. A lot of people take it for granted.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Either Jared (drums) or myself are usually cooking, the rest of the guys are drinking hahaha and then usually by then Jared is caught up on drinking and breaks out the acoustic.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

I guess running my own screen printing shop or my own creative studio but I already do that so yeah I am working my dream job and being a musician at the same time. Its great!

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

Honestly, no. I don’t feel that looking at anything that way is healthy. You won’t get the chance to do it over, so why waste time sitting and speculating when you could actually be out there getting stuff done? Have we had mis-steps? Absolutely. Will we have more? You betcha! But life isn’t about how hard you can hit, its about how hard you can get hit and keep coming. In no way shape or form is it a race, it’s a marathon, and one you have to help other people finish on your way to the end.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

I would say probably either AEnima or Lateralus by Tool. They are just such a mysterious band and I really want insight into how their albums and songs are written/recorded and approached. Both of those albums were extremely influential to me in how I write, record, and perform music. They made me realize that there was so much you/I can do with music if you don’t follow the basic 2+2=4 formula that is shoved down your throat with mainstream music.
