Beat The Drag talk a big talk in their press release for debut full-length What’s Your Damage?, proselytizing about how their ethos “is not about reinventing the wheel” and how their influences range from stoner riff merchants, ‘70s rockers, NWOBHM and snotty punk – “it’s all fair game” they say. So it’s kind of a surprise to find them sounding more like late ‘90s indie rock. And more Australian than Hollywood, which is where they apparently hail from.
There’s a garagey charm to bouncy rockers Split-Second Smile, Heroine, Mistakes Were Made and Thrush, but at the end of the day that press release smacks too much of making excuses for a lack of originality than any bold manifesto for world domination.
