Shane’s Music Challenge: MONSTER MAGNET – 1991 – Spine Of God
6.5/10

Monster Magnet - Spine Of God cover

Monster Magnet are just INSANE on their debut full length album, Spine Of God.

Opener Pill Shovel – amongst other tracks – is plain old unsettling if you aren’t braced for the aural assault, a mentalist psych garage stoner overload injected straight into the cerebral cortex via your poor little ears, which may never be the same again.

Astoundingly, singer Dave Wyndorf had given the psych drugs of his teen years up by the time he started the band, declaring recently to me in interview that he just “wrote about my teenhood in the early to mid 70s Jersey,” and that he “thought it was the height of hilarity to actually have a stoner rock band where no one got stoned!”

Nod Scene sounds like the soundtrack to a heroin overdose, the title track is like the first time you ever heard Motorhead, but with acid tripping snakes crawling all over your naked body, and Snake Dance is enough to make you break out in a cold sweat.

Who needs drugs, man – we’ve got Monster Magnet.
