SHANE’S MUSIC CHALLENGE: MASSIVE ATTACK – 1998 – Mezzanine
9/10
A hypnotically entrancing album which broodily captures a spooky, claustrophobic vibe and sounds like nothing before or since, Mezzanine is miles removed from their earlier trip-hop works.
Wrapping their dysfunction up in an electronic album that sounds like heavy rock – albeit a very progressive style thereof – with their use (for the first time) of guitars, Massive Attack created an essential masterpiece.
The chilling Teardrops and beautiful Angel stand out, but it’s a wonderful piece of music to listen to from front to back, and my favourite album of theirs.
Some other stuff you might dig
