Shane’s Music Challenge: HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS – 2006 – Greatest Hits
6/10

Huey Lewis & The News - Greatest Hits cover

It is ‘true confessions’ time here at 100% ROCK MAGAZINE: Huey Lewis & The News may be soft rock champs, but they sure are a guilty pleasure of mine, especially their Sports album.

Heart Of Rock n’ Roll, I Want A New Drug, Hip To Be Square, The Power Of Love, If This Is It, Do You Believe In Love, heart & Soul – they’re all good fun songs, though I certainly could have done without the dire cover of Smokey Robinson’s Cruisin’, by Lewis & Gwynyth Paltrow from the movie Duets. That’s WAYYYYY on the other side of the line, for me…

Now, before you get all “you’ve lost your rock cred and I can’t believe in you any more” on my cute backside – let’s not forget that it was none other than Huey Lewis playing harmonica on Thin Lizzy’s 1978 tour and the ensuing Live & Dangerous album, not to mention Phil Lynott’s 1980 album Solo In Soho, Jimmy Barnes’ Freight Train Heart album from 1987, and Sammy Hagar’s Marching To Mars record from ’97. Mind you, in addition to the Paltrow debacle (he should have ‘consciously uncoupled’ himself from that before he even started) he also produced Nick Lowe’s I Knew The Bride (When She Used To Rock n’ Roll), so his cred will never be 100% !
