Shane’s Music Challenge: D-A-D – 2002 – Soft Dogs
8.5/10
Another favourite! (Yeah, I have a lot of favourites!!)
D-A-D hail from Denmark, and used to be called ‘Disneyland After Dark’ until Walt’s people got the hump. They also played a more country, almost rockabilly, brand of rock on their first two albums, before discovering AC/DC and going round the world.
Some albums later, Soft Dogs shows a softer, gentler side to the band’s raucous rock. The title track is a powerful slow rocking love song (and I can’t help but love the way Europeans slightly mash up the English language in songs. “Baby, you’re a soft dog at my feet” – it’s so cute, love it!).
The Truth About You, Golden Way and Between You And Me are all soft burners and amongst the best tracks on the album.
Un Frappe Sur La Tete features female backing vocals from Sharin Foo of The Raveonettes, and is a faster rocker full of Euro charm.
D-A-D may be one of the most underrated bands to come out of Denmark, but they’re a must for all discerning rockers, and Soft Dogs is one of their best albums.
Some other stuff you might dig
