There’s no mistaking Baby Animals message on This Is Not The End – it’s right there in the album title, and it’s in the vibrancy and ‘back to stay’ in your face confidence of every track herein.
To say they’ve underachieved in the past is an understatement – only two studio albums in over twenty years, both released in quick succession in the early nineties. Granted both records were superb, the debut especially going on to sell in excess of a million copies, but finally they’re back with their first rock record in a lotta years.
Only half of the classic line-up remain – despite what appears to be best efforts, after a reunion for acoustic reinterpretation album Il Grand Silenzio led to abortive attempts for a new original album five or so years ago.
Frontlady Suze DeMarchi and guitarist Dave Leslie are still in command of the ship, and even with new rhythm section Dario Bortolin and Mick Skelton, the end result sounds every bit a modern take on the classic and much loved Baby Animals sound.
The entire album is stamped with class – from lead single Email, to the pulsating Bonfires, Stitch and Hot Air Balloon, it all reveals shades of their earlier work whilst stating emphatically that these Animals are back and far from near the end.
