Don has assembled some great tunes on this latest release. Wild Mick is back, as is Jon Levin on guitar and Sean McNabb joining the fold on bass. Does it sound like Dokken? Yes and no.
Yes: It is hard to mistake Don’s voice for any other out there. Regardless of whether he still hits those high notes or not, he still has a very distinct sound that has stood the test of time. The songs also have that familiar sound and foundation of all Dokken classics from the past. You can’t listen to a song like “Empire” or “Best Of Me” without wondering which album they were left off of in the 1980’s.
No: The major difference from then and now is the guitar playing. I am not trying to insinuate that Jon Levin isn’t good, but he isn’t George Lynch. That being said, Jon plays the hell out of his guitar on this disc and has finally established himself as the guitarist of Dokken. The songs would not have been any better with Lynch’s pings and squeals. After many years, Jon has been allowed to run with some leads and make them his own.
If you love Dokken, pick this one up. It has everything you loved then and will love now. If you like Dokken or have never heard of them, give it a chance. After all, a good rock record is a good rock record.
