4ARM – Submission For Liberty

Melbourne’s 4ARM have delivered a mighty old school thrash metal assault on this, their third full length album.

Fine tuning the production for the new age with an earth shakingly relentless rhythm section sound – the double kick drums boom like Michael Vafiotis has been possessed by the spirit of Metal Bonham while Andrew Hinterreiter’s bass rumbles up from the bowels of the earth.

All the while lead guitarist Johnny Glovasa and singer Danny Tomb’s guitars lay down enormous riffs and blistering solos – it’s no surprise to see they are attracting some serious international attention and have already been added to the Download festival lineup in England.

Tomb’s vocals are powerful and melodic throughout – and thankfully devoid of lazy & derivative “cookie monster” growls.

When, in the title track, he roars “I hate this place, I hate your face, fuck you”, he lifts a seemingly simple lyric to the status of an exalted mantra – and you know without a doubt that he means it.

Likewise standout I Will Not Bow is a huge track with an emphatic vocal and aggressive, sawing guitars with touches of Anthrax, Megadeth and even a little Venom in the mix.

“Submission For Liberty” is the best thrash album of 2012 thus far, to these ears.
