There are few bands that can take an arena full of people and turn it into one massive singalong quite like Weezer. On Saturday night, October 10th, the alternative rock veterans rolled into Atlanta’s State Farm Arena for a night that celebrated more than three decades of music, and judging by the energy inside the packed venue, their fans haven’t lost an ounce of enthusiasm. The evening kicked off with Silversun Pickups, followed by The Shins, two bands that helped set the tone for what would become an incredible night of alternative rock. By the time Weezer took the stage, the crowd was more than ready.
Opening with “Shine Again” from their new self-titled Gold Album, Weezer was greeted with thunderous applause. It was a strong start that immediately gave way to two longtime favorites, “Surf Wax America” and “Keep Fishin’,” sending the crowd into full singalong mode. What made this show particularly enjoyable was the variety of songs pulled from throughout the band’s extensive catalog. With roughly 20 albums to draw from, Weezer delivered a 26-song set that balanced the familiar hits with deeper cuts and newer material. “Hash Pipe,” “The Good Life,” “No Other One,” “Lonely Girl,” and “C.E.O.” all found their place in the evening’s performance. One of the night’s biggest crowd reactions came during “Beverly Hills,” when the band changed the lyrics to “Livin’ in Atlanta, GA.” It was a simple change, but one that brought a tremendous roar from the audience.
About halfway through the show, things took an unexpected turn when the power went out as part of the performance. Rather than bringing everything to a halt, the band transitioned into acoustic versions of “Longtime Sunshine” and “In the Garage.” It was a fun change of pace that gave the evening a more intimate feel despite the thousands of fans filling the arena. Rivers Cuomo eventually brought the power back, but not before switching things up even further. For “Pork and Beans,” Cuomo took over on drums while drummer Patrick Wilson moved to lead guitar. It was one of those moments that reminded everyone that even after all these years, Weezer still knows how to keep things interesting.
The second half kicked off with “My Name Is Jonas,” bringing the energy right back up. Other standouts included “Pink Triangle” and “We Might As Well Be Strangers,” another track from the new Gold Album. Silversun Pickups bassist Nikki Monninger also returned to the stage, joining Weezer for “Go Away” and “I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams.” Her appearance added another memorable element to an already entertaining performance. But it was the final stretch that really brought the nostalgia. Closing out the evening with “Undone (The Sweater Song),” “El Scorcho,” “Say It Ain’t So,” “Buddy Holly,” and “Island in the Sun,” Weezer delivered five songs that could have easily been the highlight of the night on their own. Hearing an arena full of fans singing along to songs that have been around for decades was a reminder of just how much staying power this band has. By the time the final notes rang out, Weezer had delivered exactly what fans came for: great music, a few surprises, and plenty of opportunities to sing at the top of their lungs. After more than 30 years, Weezer continues to prove that their music connects just as strongly today as it did when many of us first discovered them.
