Castle Rat’s arrival at The Masquerade felt like an occasion long before the music started. Heaven was packed wall to wall, the merchandise lines ran long, and fans dressed in Castle Rat–themed costumes filled the room. Atlanta came ready to be part of the spectacle, bringing an excitement that made the band’s fantasy world feel right at home. It’s impressive how quickly Castle Rat have made a name for themselves, and this crowd offered a clear picture of that momentum. I caught them opening for Amon Amarth a few months ago, and that performance left me eager to see them again. More than anything, I wanted to see what they could do with their stagecraft in a headlining show. With a room full of fans ready to embrace every bit of their fantasy universe, The Masquerade was the perfect place to find out. Portland, Oregon’s Unto Others helped set the tone with an opening performance full of energy. Their sound worked beautifully alongside Castle Rat’s, making the pairing feel natural while giving the night its own sense of progression. They brought an enthusiasm that fed the room’s anticipation and set the stage for the spectacle to come.
That kind of anticipation sets a high bar, and Castle Rat delivered. Their theatrics and stagecraft were on point, giving the evening a sense of environment that extended beyond the songs. Appearances by the Rat, a wizard, and a snake brought their fantasy world to life throughout the show, ultimately building to a sword battle with the Rat. Those theatrical touches gave the crowd plenty to take in between the music and the unfolding action. Having seen them in a supporting slot, it was especially satisfying to watch that presentation take center stage at their own headlining show. The set opened with “PHOENIX I” before moving into “Dagger Dragger,” “WIZARD,” and “WOLF I,” establishing a running order steeped in Castle Rat’s blend of fantasy and doom metal. Material from *The Bestiary* featured prominently, while “Feed the Dream” and “Fresh Fur” brought selections from *Into the Realm* into the evening’s journey. Together, those songs offered a welcome mix for fans who have followed the band from its debut and those drawn into the realm more recently. “UNICORN” and “PATH OF MOSS” continued the fantasy thread, followed by “CRYSTAL CAVE” and “Fresh Fur.” The main set eventually reached “DRAGON” and “SERPENT,” with “Cry for Me” and “SIREN” completing the encore. Even on paper, the song titles suggest an adventure; paired with Castle Rat’s stage presentation, they gave the night a cohesive identity.
What made the Atlanta show especially memorable was the shared enthusiasm between the stage and the floor. Fans had put thought into their costumes, lined up for merchandise, and arrived ready to embrace the full experience. Castle Rat rewarded that enthusiasm with a show whose theatrical ambition matched the occasion. A few months after that first encounter opening for Amon Amarth, Castle Rat delivered the headlining experience I had been looking forward to. The packed house, elaborate fan attire, and excitement throughout the room spoke to how quickly their world is growing. Castle Rat brought their realm to Atlanta, and The Masquerade’s crowd showed up ready to inhabit it.
