Jason Derulo hit the stage at RAC arena in Perth last night to perform a very entertaining but slightly problematic performance.

Derulo’s music fits best into the categories of contemporary R&B and pop music, perfectly fitting for a club or party setting, and he had a team of over 10 backup dancers and a DJ set up in the back right throughout the performance. There were multiple costume changes for Mr Derulo himself and every one of his dancers, ranging from animal print body suits; a silver leotard followed by a red lace number; and Playboy-inspired lingerie outfits. All costume and set changes were done in good time while the audience was distracted by snippets from other popular songs such as I Got A Feeling by Black Eyed Peas, Replay (Shawty’s Like A Melody) by Iyaz and Fein by Travis Scott.

Derulo has impressive singing ability and has mastered the art of writing and producing a catchy track. Despite this though, his vocals were oversaturated with autotune, which was hardly necessary. Worse still, 95% of his backdrops and video montages made to play during songs were AI, some of which had nothing to do with the song title, melody or lyrics. I can imagine the reason for this was money-related, but it left us wishing that any artist playing such huge venues (and making money accordingly) would choose to invest in some more fitting and organic options.

Ignoring the flaws in the production of this tour, I have never seen RAC Arena so alive during a performance (and I have seen many a show there). Derulo has this ability to use his charisma in all the right ways to engage the audience, pairing this with the fact he is a brilliant dancer and kept the crowd hooked at all points during the night. If he wasn’t singing or telling a story, he was getting his dance on.

Derulo’s 2-hour set was broken up into different sections all with their own name, effectively eliminating the possibility of boredom throughout – 1. Derulo Jungle, 2. Derulo’s velvet room and 3. Derulo volcano. Each section came with an alteration of the stage design, backdrops and lighting effects.

Considering Derulo’s prime demographic is teenagers and young adults his entire performance was very sexual – which wouldn’t have necessarily been a bad thing if it hadn’t gotten to the point where he was putting on a new jacket every 5 minutes to “sexily” take it off.

Derulo has the voice, the looks and the talent he needs to succeed in the way every singer wants, but he drowns out his talent with synthetic elements. Regardless of that his concert was a very fun one and with the visual and sound effects, lighting, smoke guns, flame cannons and not just confetti but streamer guns also, it seems no expense was spared for this tour (apart from the dull AI visuals): couple that with the dancers ability and jaw dropping outfits and you’ve got yourself an unforgettable show.
