According to a recent press release: “Transcontinental trio SAVE US — Miguel Owls [vocals], Chris Biddiscombe [guitar], and Benji Havercroft [drums] — will release their new album Death To Something on October 16 via Solid State Records. The origin story of SAVE US and how the globally-based band came together is quite simple. Back in 2023, Owls was regularly posting covers on social media and quietly cultivating a following online. Hailing from the Central Valley of California, he never expected to find his future bandmates in his DMs. Bristol, UK-based Biddiscombe stumbled upon one of the vocalist’s Architects covers and sent a message on TikTok. Clicking right away, they commenced creating music (despite over 5,000 miles between them). Due to a factory day job from 1pm-9:30pm, Owls typically woke up at 5am in order to write with Chris and Benji before work. Prior to meeting in-person, the trio had remotely recorded a few tracks. Eventually, the singer crossed the pond to shoot the visual for “Distance” from their LUCID EP. Reacting with listeners, the track clocked north of 2.6 million Spotify streams. The group maintained their momentum with 2024’s EXIST EP. A year later, they inked a deal with Solid State and decamped to Michigan where they recorded with sought-after producer and The Plot In You mastermind Landon Tewers. Ultimately, the band’s name reflects their shared experience. Mission accomplished on Death To Something, which in all actuality, brought the band members back to life.” We get guitarist Chris to discuss new music, influences, and more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets you put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

There is certainly throw back moments on the record that old time fans might appreciate, but more so I think the record itself and the way the it takes place from song to song may resonate and make more sense to older fans a lot quicker.

2. What got you into music and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

My father used to play records all the time when I was little and he would play acoustic guitar around me a lot and I always wanted to join in, taught me my first riff too, I grew up appreciating a lot of bands and artists but when I heard bands like Deftones and Limp Bizkit I knew I wanted to do that!

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

Some artists that really shaped how I approached music growing up was certainly Deftones as I mentioned previously, but albums that really opened my eyes were Underoath’s Define The Great Line, Architects Hollow Crown, Sky Eats Airplane’s Self Titled record. Saturday Night Wrist and Diamond Eyes from Deftones really meant a lot to me too. It made me think about the possibilities of genre fusing from an early age.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

This is a super tough one and I know me and the guys would all agree on Noah Sebastian.

5. What is your favorite activity when out of the studio and/or not on tour? What do you like to do to unwind?

We are all quite creative people so it’s hard to stop sometimes! We all work on music outside of the band too, but aside from that Miguel has his solo work and social media and like myself he has a family so we spend as much time with them as we can. I personally also run a barbershop and a Hobby gamer store, We don’t know how to unwind! Something I know we all have in common as a band is spending time in nature to unwind for sure.

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

I always struggle with this question but I tend to say it’s heavy emotive and experimental modern metal. The one thing I’ve found myself disagreeing with on a reviewer of the band is that Miguel sounds like other vocalists out there, I think when he sings you know it’s him and nobody else.

7. When your band is hanging out together, who cooks, who gets the drinks in, and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Due to us being apart (myself and Benji in the UK and Miguel in the US) when we are together it’s all band related work stuff, but with that we always like to eat out, we are all big foodies!

8. When was the last time you were starstruck and who was it?

I remember taking Miguel to meet George Lever a friend of mine and Miguel had followed his work for years he was pretty stoked! The novelty has worn off now that they’re friends!

9. What is the best part of being a musician? If you could no longer be a musician for whatever reason, what would be your dream job?

Creating is the best part for sure, it’s a very personal special thing and sharing it with the guys is the dream. I think we would all stay in the creative space somehow, I think being artist transcends across into business if you’re that way inclined. We are all the type to work ourselves. I think my dream job outside of music would be a writer. I’d love to write fantasy novels.

10. What is one question you have always wanted an interviewer to ask – and what is the answer? Conversely, what question are you tired of answering?

This is a tough one, we’re all quite private people so we love anything about our interests like what our favourite video games are or something along those lines, for the record mine is Zelda Ocarina of Time. We also like being asked about the origin story of the band was it’s such a unique story, TLDR response would be I reached out to Miguel online after seeing him performing a vocal cover in which at that point in time both of us and Benji were going to give up pursing music, we started working together remotely and the rest is history.

11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over,” even if it didn’t change your current situation?

We’ve been very fortunate not to have had anything crazy go wrong, there was one song omitted from our last EP that we don’t feel that we could release now, but at the time it was our favourite song on that record, sometimes we feel like we shouldn’t have held out back.

12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

I know everyone in the band will have their own answer for this, but mine is He Is Legend with the record It Hates You, that album to me is a rock music masterpiece its so unique and diverse there is nothing like that record out there and the engineering and mixing for the time is incredible.
