This October marks fifty years of Dave Warner’s from the Suburbs – one of Australia’s most original bands, and true doyens of the pub-rock era.

Dubbed the “Suburban Boy,” Dave Warner is one of Bob Dylan’s favourite Australian artists. He launched out of Perth in 1972 with punk band Pus, before refining the concept into “suburban rock” – music that captured the mundane reality of young Aussie life in the ’70s. By the late ’70s, Dave Warner’s from the Suburbs had crash-tackled Australia’s largely imitative rock scene with raw energy and originality. Their album Mugs Game went gold in eight weeks, powered by tracks like “Convict Streak” and “Half Time at the Football” – proto-rap anthems, sung in a broad Australian accent, that sliced up the national culture so sharply they got Warner arrested in Perth for “obscene songs.”

Now, to mark that era, DWFTS will play five shows this October: quite possibly their last chance to deliver this history live, from womb to tomb.

Dave Warner: “We started as suburban frumps with something to say about the mundane. Fifty years later, we can still make the normal abnormally exciting. Come and watch us prove it — Suburbs from all eras grouped, possibly for the last time.”

The line-up reunites key figures across five decades: guitarist Tony Durant, who played on the original Suburbs demos in the UK over 50 years ago and later joined for Mugs Game; drummer Howie Johnstone, who played the first-ever Suburbs gigs in October ’76 before joining full-time in ’78; and bass duties shared between Phil Bailey (1980–present) and Paul Noonan (Mugs Game, Free Kicks). First-timers Sam Musca (guitar) and Phil Bennett (keys) round out the band, with guest appearances from Nicole Warner, Billy Beare, and Suburbs alumni spanning 1977’s Haydn Pickersgill to Lloyd Gyi (1989–2026).

The Perth finale at the Astor Theatre carries an extra twist: punk outfit Pus reunite on stage for the first time since 1975.
