A venue change from Red Hill to Metro City meant the club had a full house for this much-anticipated show, despite it no longer being all ages. The queue for the venue snaking back into Northbridge, and even with Media passes, we missed most of the first act as we were stuck out the front.
Upon entry merch stands hugged the entrance and revealed another line that snaked the staircase. The moment you stepped through the doors, however, the cold disappeared, replaced by the welcome warmth of the collective body heat of hundreds of metalheads.
Invent Animate’s set showcased their trademark blend of ambient metalcore, djent and progressive influences. The crowd seemed somewhat restrained earlier in the set, whether that was because many were still filing through the entrance or they were just getting warmed up, they were still eager to abide and choose a side – Wall of Death won.
From Sweden, Imminence is a band that elegantly blends metalcore and Scandinavian metal with classical string arrangements. They delivered a performance that felt cinematic in every sense of the word. Their violin was no gimmick – it possesses an ethereal beauty that is woven into the DNA of the band’s sound and symphonic depth that tells a story.
IMMINENCE PHOTOS AWAITING MANAGEMENT APPROVAL
One standout moment saw guitarist Harald Barrett pull a bow from behind his back like a samurai unsheathing a sword. The bowed-guitar passage cut through the darkness, creating a haunting tension that made the ensuing breakdown hit even harder. Their final song ‘The Black’ concluded with solitary violin lingering in the air; a haunting finale that had the venue momentarily suspended and covered in goosebumps.
I Prevail gained worldwide attention with their heavy cover of TayTay’s Blank Space, leading to this, their biggest Australian headline tour to date.
The stage exploded to life as they launched into ‘NOW’ and Perth was all in. A wall of voices screamed every word, and a Wall of Death formed within seconds, generating enough energy to power the rest of the tour. Despite the chaos, the metal community’s trademark respect remained front and centre, with fallen fans immediately helped back to their feet.
Though jet-lagged, the band’s chemistry was impossible to miss. Stage banter was plentiful, a mixed bag of laughs, stories, and crowd interaction. After persistent encouragement from the audience, vocalist Eric Vanlerberghe obliged with the traditional “shoey”, although the pristine condition of the shoe suggested he had come prepared.
One of my personal favourites, ‘Violent Nature’, saw full audience participation. To be honest, I think all of us can relate to the line: “I’m a sick motherfucker with a violent nature.”
There was no chance for the energy to drop. A crowd-hyping rendition of Metallica’s ‘Sad But True’ whipped the floor into a sea of heads banging in unison before I Prevail detonated into Rain, sending the crowd into a fresh wave of chaos.
Drummer Gabe Helguera then took centre stage with an insane drum solo over Benny Benassi’s Satisfaction remix.
Backed by epic visuals and relentless lighting, material from the new album landed with enormous impact, proving that this new era of I Prevail is every bit as powerful live as fans had hoped.
The Violent Nature Tour delivered exactly what fans crave: crushing heaviness, genuine emotion, and unforgettable live moments.
