This evening was nothing short of spectacular. I had high hopes coming into this show for a great time and was not disappointed. The majority of the crowd came dressed up for the night of baroque circus meets Cyndi Lauper pop. I discovered this band about 6 months ago on YouTube and immediately fell in love. So when I saw that they would be playing at Exit/In, I wasted no time submitting a request to be able to partake and catch them live. From start to finish, the amount of showmanship and stage mastery was apparent, as well as their love for the craft and the audience. Within minutes of them getting on stage, they were already having full audience participation with what was going on on the stage. Every song was absolutely stellar to see performed live. I was already looking forward to seeing them perform “Dance the Pain Away” and “Shy Girl,” but before that, they had an audience participation where they needed their royal court. So after a few minutes of selecting their king, queen, knights, pope, and pink beret members, they left them to enact what they were singing throughout the course of “Scantily Clad” before leaving them to slip away back down to the crowd, keeping what they had been given as their props for the number. Numerous times, they had multiple extra stage performers launch into riotous routines that only further accentuated the shenanigans coming from the musicians.
Near the end of the evening, Buzz, the vocalist of the duo, stopped for a second and had an emotional moment about when she was attending Belmont University here in Nashville and was playing gigs, constantly feeling like she was less talented than the other artists performing in town. And that it was really emotional to be able to say that she was playing an absolutely sold-out performance at the legendary Exit/In. To lift the spirits after they dove into a cover of David Bowie’s hit song “Let’s Dance” before closing the evening out with “Symphony for a Queen” and “Shy Girl.” This band and entire performance were a 10/10 recommend to everyone looking for an engaging and highly enjoyable night out.
