Heavy riffs and ethereal vocals filled this sold-out show from start to finish at Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville, TN. This was the third time I was fortunate to be able to catch a HEALTH show, and boy, did they not miss a beat and maintain a larger-than-life presence on the stage. From start to finish, this night was max energy from both the bands HEALTH and Carpenter Brut down to the crowd in attendance. This was the first time I was able to catch a Carpenter Brut set. They filled the room with heavy synthwave sounds, and everyone was moshing and crowd surfing. Seeing their control of the crowd was pretty amazing. I wasn’t sure what to expect with them, but I was very familiar with their catalog of music before attending. The notable tracks performed by Carpenter that I was really excited to hear live were “Major Threat,” “Turbo Killer,” and “Neon Demon.” When Carpenter performed their song “Maniac” which is a Michael Sembello cover, the entire crowd was screaming back, singing along. I already knew how the crowds react to HEALTH, so seeing this mostly synthwave instrumental act hold the room at a full high-energy pace was very exciting to see.
When HEALTH hit the stage, it was the normal routine of dim lighting and outstanding use of strobes throughout their performance. This tour was interesting because they have typically been a three-piece outfit, and on this tour, they added a guitarist, Justin McKinney of the band The Zenith Passage. Seeing how organic he flowed and worked with the rest of the band, one would think he was always a member if they weren’t familiar with HEALTH before the evening. Every song they performed was straight jaw-droppingly good. Songs that I was excited to hear performed again live were “FEEL NOTHING,” “Major Crimes,” and “DSM-V.” Like every other HEALTH performance I have been to in the past, there was no encore. They like to have a straightforward, heavy-hitting performance and then be done. And like always, once done, the band thanked the audience in attendance and left the stage, leaving John Famiglietti to launch himself into the crowd to surf and hang with people after the show. I have been a rabid fan since the first time I was able to catch them live a few years ago, and will always go out of my way to catch another performance of theirs. They are a simply divine live performance.
