It’s February 28, and one of my favourite Swedish bands is in town. I couldn’t be more excited to see Orbit Culture headlining as they tour North America behind their new album Death Above Life, released late last year. This being their first North American headlining tour makes it even more exciting — after all, we’re getting more Orbit Culture than on any previous Winnipeg date. Orbit Culture made sure to bring some friends along. Finnish band Atlas opened the night, and what an incredible start it was. Moody, atmospheric, and full of energy, Atlas commanded the stage with authority. Easily one of my favourite opening acts I’ve seen on tour — it’s clear Orbit Culture knows how to pick their friends. After Atlas, we were treated to some American deathcore from Ov Sulfur. Wow — I was an instant fan. They hit fast and hard, like a slap in the face, delivering some of the most brutal, powerful vocals and massive, groove-driven breakdowns of the night. A fantastic addition to the tour.

Orbit Culture’s set design featured a massive banner hanging in the background, with multiple banners flanking the drum riser like war-marching standards, all emblazoned with the Death Above Life artwork. Between each banner sat vertical lighting rigs, and their light show was something to behold. They finished the look with stomp boxes lit from underneath, each cut with the Orbit Culture logo — moody and highly atmospheric, just like the band’s sound. Orbit Culture came out swinging and never let off the gas. If you know anything about them, you know they operate like a machine, bulldozing their way through the set. They opened strong with “Death Above Life” from their newest record, and that album received the bulk of the spotlight. Five tracks made the setlist: “Death Above Life,” “Bloodhound,” “Hydra,” “The Storm,” and “The Tales of War.” The first three songs of the night came from the new record, with the rest strategically placed throughout — “Bloodhound” landing at the halfway mark and “Hydra” closing out the main run. The fourth track of the night, “North Star of Nija,” pulled from their 2020 album Nija, which ultimately saw three songs represented, including “Open Eye” and “The Shadowing.” We were also treated to the older cut “Saw” from 2018’s Redfog, plus two tracks from 2023’s Descent — arguably the record that truly put them on the North American radar — “From the Inside” and the show closer, “Vultures of North.”

Orbit Culture was made to headline. They perform with precision, energy, and dominance, and their atmospheric brutality paired with the moody lighting is genuinely something magical to witness. Niklas Karlsson’s intense growls and soaring melodic vocals are incredible live. Richard Hansson’s guitar work is precise, groove-locked melodic death metal that blends tight harmonized leads with crushing, down-tuned heaviness. Fredrik Lennartsson provides thick, tightly locked bass lines that reinforce the band’s massive low end while adding punch and drive, and Christopher Wallerstedt delivers explosive yet controlled drumming, powered by relentless double-kick work and razor-sharp cymbal precision. Orbit Culture’s first North American headlining run proved exactly why their momentum keeps building. From the moment they hit the stage to the final notes of the night, the band delivered a crushing, tightly executed performance that felt every bit as massive as their recordings. Backed by strong support from Atlas and Ov Sulfur, the entire evening carried a relentless energy that never dipped. Simply put, Orbit Culture has fully arrived as a headlining force. If this tour is any indication of what’s ahead, North American fans are going to be seeing — and hearing — a lot more from them in the years to come.
