One thing Whitechapel can always prove is that even on a cold night, they will pack a house ready for some face-melting metal. Hitting the stage in Nashville, TN, at Marathon Music Works to what must have been a sold-out show at the doors, the crowd was eager and ready. Having already turned the entire space into one giant circle pit and wall of death several times for the opening acts, everyone there was ready for one of Tennessee’s own getting out there and owning the room. This wasn’t the first time that I have caught a Whitechapel show, and it definitely won’t be the last. I hadn’t been able to catch a performance since 2016, when I was still living in Knoxville, Tennessee, where the band hails from. So being able to see that big room magic almost a decade later and seeing how far they have progressed since then was beyond my expectations.

Their show was relatively short, but considering it was an all-ages show, there was a time constraint for the end of the evening. They made the best use of every second imaginable and filled it to the brim.  The main set, which was only 9 tracks, was the performance of their newest album to drop, titled Hymns In Dissonance. Even only released just this year, the crowd knew every single moment of each track and were steadily body surfing into the pit or moshing. After the end of their initial set, the band left the stage for a short time and came back for an encore of several tracks from their initial releases that made the crowd go apeshit. Ending the evening with my personal favorite track of the night, “This Is Exile,” felt right. While I was hanging out after the show, the crowd still piled over to merch to make sure they got last-minute purchases before leaving for the evening. It’s always a pleasure to see the enjoyment on a ticketed crowd member leaving, getting more than what they expected or imagined in an evening of sonic bliss.
