Upon getting onto the stage, Of Monsters and Men were met by loud applause and hushed cheers. Throughout the course of the evening, they were extremely gracious to the fans, with how well received they were with “Thank you so much” after every song. They started the evening off with “Television Love” and “Dream Team” from their new album, and “King and Lionheart.” I knew that the night was going to be stellar. They played a mix of songs from their various releases through their performance, but focused primarily on the new album The Mouse Parade. The manner in which they spaced old hits was very well orchestrated, and you could see that this band was very practiced and loved every second of what they do. Whenever you can see and feel that love of the craft, it becomes infectious and makes the entire evening even more enjoyable. The crowd was very polite as well. It was a pretty low-energy show due to how polite they were, but it was more of an experience than a concert. The lighting production of the show was excellent. The mood and tone fit every single aspect of their performance.
At one point in the evening, Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir stopped to make a quick note about the weather in Nashville. She joked and said that when they looked at the weather in Nashville, they got excited because it was in the 70’s. But the evening of the show, it was randomly 20 degrees with snow flurries. She said that she got off the plane and said “WTF” and then apologized for bringing Icelandic weather with them to Nashville and promised to take it with them when they left. The crowd laughed hard. Near the end of the main set, the opener Arny Margret came back onto the stage to play harmonica and sing additional backing vocals during “Little Talk.” Over the course of the show, there were several moments where they stopped and chatted with the crowd. By the end of the night, everyone on the stage and in the crowd was fulfilled with an absolutely perfect experience. I had never been able to catch them before. And after this performance, I will most definitely go out of my way even to travel to see them perform again. The energy in the room was felt by all. This evening was nothing short of magical.
