A Dirty Dozen with JOSH HARRINGTON from HORIZON THEORY – November 2025
According to a recent press release: “Horizon Theory has released their new single “Transcendence,” featuring Morgan Rose of Sevendust on both guest vocals and drums, available now via Mindful Recordings. “Transcendence” marks the first single from Horizon Theory’s upcoming full-length album, Mission Control, slated for release in March 2026. Accompanied by a visualizer, the track delivers an atmospheric and hard-hitting sonic experience. Horizon Theory is a 5-piece Heavy Rock/Metal band that is quickly showing that they have what it takes to become a mainstay in the genre. The airtight rhythm section featuring Luen Murr on Bass produces the foundation for what will only prove to be more complex and melodic. Chris Black layers guitars that can mesmerize and enchant just as easily as they can violently blast through whatever is in the path. This all sets the stage for Josh Harrington to invoke emotion and energy from any crowd that witnesses his passionate vocal performance. HORIZON THEORY has exploded onto the scene with energy and conviction.” We get Josh to discuss new music, influences, and more…
1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets you put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?
Well “Transcendence” features Morgan Rose on the drums and he’s actually doing back up harmonies as well! You might not hear them the first or second time through, but if you listen, he is in there! More on the second verse.
2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?
I never really thought about making a career out of it until I was almost 30. Though growing up, it was always kind of a dream. I would get home from school and throw a Mötley Crüe or Ozzy tape in and jam it until my parents got home. Music cranked with every window in the house open, thinking I was the coolest kid on the block. I was always drawn towards huge, clean vocals and a soaring guitar solo. So it’s always kind of been there.
3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?
I found my love of music the first time I heard Ozzy Osbourne sitting in a car seat. That started it all really. As I got a little older I remember my mom listening to a lot of Tesla, and for me that was a side of rock that I hadn’t known. The gooey love stuff which is a guilty pleasure of mine.
4. Who would be your main five musical influences?
Ozzy, Tesla, Bullet For My Valentine, Metallica, and Alter Bridge.
5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?
I would have to say Myles Kennedy. His vocals are amazing and I think we could come up with something really cool. There isn’t much of his music that I don’t like. He also just seems like a genuine dude. While we’re at it you might as well throw Mark Tremonti on the track too! Haha
6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?
I’d say we’re high energy and hard hitting. Some anthem style choruses. We’re real and I think our music is relatable with a lot of people. To be honest I haven’t really heard anything from a fan that I didn’t like. Most of the comparisons that I have heard were huge compliments. I hear Chester and Layne Staley a lot and I’ll take that all day haha!! We’ve heard we have elements of Lincoln Park on some songs, Alexisonfire a couple times which I had never heard of until recent. They jam!
7. When your band is hanging out together, who cooks, who gets the drinks in, and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?
Well I don’t really play guitar but I’m usually the one to pick it up if we’re just hangin around. Cello cooks breakfast and gets the hard drinks usually, Luis gets the pop, and Chris and I get to reap the benefits. They don’t know it yet but they work for us hahahaha.
8. When was the last time you were starstruck and who was it?
I don’t really get starstruck, but there was this one time I was at a Slash, Steel Panther, and Hillbilly Herald show with my buddy Mike. We’re standing out front getting a drink and we hear ‘hey Mikey.’ I look up here comes John 5 headed right towards me. He and Mike hugged and I was introduced. I was definitely a little shook at first. I didn’t know they were friends and this was way before I ever got into the industry.
9. What is the best part of being a musician? If you could no longer be a musician for whatever reason, what would be your dream job?
One of the best parts for me is the connections you make along the way. Having conversations about what our music means to people and how it helps them. It’s very fulfilling. My dream job would be to live off the land. Small Community in Alaska or the Upper Peninsula in Michigan. I’d love to be able to just work everyday on my own stuff.
10. What is one question you have always wanted an interviewer to ask – and what is the answer? Conversely, what question are you tired of answering?
Nobody ever asks how fast I can run in my new shoes… It gets old being asked where we came up with the name Horizon Theory. Bro, I don’t even know. I think we come up with something different every time we answer that question and it’s not even on purpose hahaha.
11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over,” even if it didn’t change your current situation?
I wish I would have persuaded music earlier in life. That’s about the only thing that I would change about my journey so far.
12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?
There are a few that would just be insane but I’d love to see what it was like writing 2112 by Rush. It’s literally one song from front to back and then back again. In every song you can hear the other songs. I think it was absolutely genius and would have been cool just to hear the conversations that went on while writing and structuring the songs on the album.
