The Dirty Heads are on the road with Jake Owen, and the tour launched right here in Jacksonville at Daily’s Place. At first glance, it’s a pairing that might make you pause — country and reggae-rock on the same bill? One of these things seems not like the other. But as it turned out, they meshed better than anyone could’ve guessed. In fact, The Dirty Heads’ lead singer addressed it head-on during the set: “Jake plays fun music, we play fun music — so we should play fun music together.” Fair point. And with The Wailers opening the night, this eclectic lineup had the crowd ready for anything. As the sun dipped behind the stadium and the temperature started to fall, The Wailers took the stage and immediately turned up the warmth. With a set full of Bob Marley favorites, they reminded everyone that good vibes never go out of style. Their grooves rolled over the amphitheater like a slow ocean wave — steady, familiar, and impossible not to move to.
Then came Jake Owen, kicking off his set with “The One That Got Away” before moving into “The Ride” and “Beachin’,” which hit mid-set like a cool breeze off the coast. Owen didn’t stay in his lane, though. He peppered the night with covers from George Strait, The Cadillac Three, and hometown heroes Lynyrd Skynyrd — because, really, who doesn’t love a little “Georgia Peaches” in the mix? Owen worked the crowd like a pro, tossing out beer cans, drumsticks, guitar picks — anything he could get his hands on — while flashing that trademark grin. Midway through, he changed the mood, taking a seat in front of his keyboardist to perform “I Was Made For You.” The amphitheater fell quiet; it was a moment that pulled everyone in close. But before the crowd could get too sentimental, he brought the energy right back up with “American Country Love Song” and, of course, closed with his signature anthem, “Barefoot Blue Jean Night.”
Then it was time for The Dirty Heads. They didn’t ease in — they hit in. The first bass drop rattled the seats and probably a few car alarms downtown. Their genre-bending style covered it all — reggae, rap, hip-hop, and rock — delivered with precision and swagger. Cloaked in fog and awash in color from the stage lights, the band was often just silhouettes against the haze, but the sound was unmistakable. They ran through fan favorites like “Island Glow,” “Dance All Night,” and “Lay Me Down,” keeping the crowd in constant motion. When they launched into their cover of Joe Walsh’s “Life’s Been Good,” the singalong was deafening — not a single voice held back. As the set carried on, the atmosphere grew thicker: fog from the stage mixed with another kind of smoke drifting up from the crowd, the unmistakable scent of shared good times. By the end of the night, it was clear that this unlikely pairing worked. Jake Owen brought the heart, The Dirty Heads brought the heat, and The Wailers set the tone. Together, they turned Daily’s Place into a laid-back, high-energy celebration that blurred every genre line in sight — the kind of night that leaves your ears ringing and your soul lighter.
