Review and Photographs by: Todd “Toddstar” Jolicoeur (www.toddstarphotography.com)

On the recommendation of a friend, I decided to step out on a Monday night, head to a small local music club, and check out another artist new to me.  This evening had me wandering into Charlotte’s Underground to check out G Flip’s tour stop.  With opener Chinchilla in tow, the night was going to filled with pop music from top to bottom.  Taking her place on stage, Chinchilla delivered six tracks to prepare the crowd for the headliner.  She had a blast as witnessed by the smile on her face from moment to moment as she worked the crowd and gained some new fans tonight in North Carolina.  Before we knew it, the time arrived that G Flip’s crew was converting the stage, quickly I might add, to allow them to hit the stage with what would be a very special show.  The packed venue was able to share G Flip’s Birthday Celebration over the course of the evening.  Armed with a new release, Dream Ride, which dropped earlier in the month, G took us through their catalog with a couple bonuses and surprises.  Kicking the show off with the catchy “Disco Cowgirl” and jumping straight into the contagious grooves and lyrics of “Gay 4 Me” created a cool one-two punch to introduce this guy to the performer.  Another catchy track that won me over, where a lot of the crowd was well in front of the curve, was “Drink Too Much.”  I was familiar with a few tracks on the latest release as I tried to familiarize myself and found myself becoming a fan and that grew exponentially during the show.  “Let’s Take This Show on the Road” was one of those tracks I latched on to while spinning the new material leading up to the show date.  Reaching back to their last release Drummer, Flip ran the band through “Good Enough” and “Rough” before another new track “Big Ol’ Hammer.”  In a move that claimed to be the first and last time a song would be played live, G treated us all to “Love Hurts” before performing “Be Your Man” and an incredible cover to Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer.”  The show was full of energy and a ton of playful banter from G Flip that not only helped guide the show, but brought the crowd, the band, and the performer together bonding from moment to moment and stringing together a night of music, fun, and good vibes.  The show ended as strong as it started with an encore of “The Worst Person Alive” before “In Another Life” sent us all into the night laughing, smiling, and on a positive buzz.  If you get a chance, go out on a limb and check G Flip out on the current run… you just might find a new favorite to put into your rotation as well.
