This petite tome is an existential musing on beer’s merits, a casual history and even an anthropological study about the amber fluid’s place in the human race’s societies for the past, roughly, fifteen thousands years.

Written by Jane Peyton, the UK’s first Beer Sommelier of The Year, and published by the British Library, so it’s focussed largely on UK life, but written with affection and humour rather than overly highbrow.

This love letter to the frothy stuff is an interesting and intriguing celebration and easy to digest – especially when washed down with a handsome pint.
