In a word, the recent Diana Krall tour stop in Detroit can be framed with the four letters “ZING!” My photography and concert bucket list shrunk by one on a beautiful June Saturday night when I wandered into Detroit’s Fisher Theatre to witness Diana Krall play to a sold-out crowd. As the show began, I had camera in hand to photograph my two allotted songs before I could settle in and really enjoy the show. With my excitement and camera both working over drive, I know there was an opening song, but damned if I can remember what it was. As Diana rolled through “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” and my camera time expired, my anticipation for the rest of the performance was building with each note she played. I exited the theatre to put away all my gear and missed a couple of songs but quickly settled into my seat for the remainder of the show. Through songs “All Of Me” and “When I Look In Your Eyes,” listening to Krall’s vocals swirling from the sound system with her piano was nothing short of phenomenal. When Diana parted her lips to sing, the mesmerizing sound of her vocals danced with the piano interludes that accompanied them. The trio on stage – Krall, bassist Sebastian Steinberg, and drummer Brian Blade – played the setlist with perfection drawing cheers and applause from track to track. After “Girl In The Other Room,” we were treated to a storyteller version of “Just You, Just Me” that also included an impromptu interaction. Upon hearing a wine glass on the floor resonate through the venue, Krall interjected ‘Cheers’ into the microphone. As that song ended, the rhythm section exited the stage leaving Krall to entertain us with no accompaniment, not that she needed it.
The next four songs, including personal favorites “Let’s Fall in Love,” “The Look of Love,” and “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning” featured some of the best smoldering vocals I have ever heard recorded or live. Welcoming the remainder of her trio back to the stage, they broke into “Day In, Day Out” and the hypnotizing piano and vocals that were perfectly supported by the bass and drums allowed me to sink further into the musical landscape being created. Watching her pick songs to be played was energizing and I was happy to be along for the musical ride. Working through the set and toward the end of her performance, Diana and her musical conspirators cranked out an amazing version of “I’m Confessin’ (That I Love You)” before moving onto the Bob Dylan penned “Queen Jane Approximately.” Krall seemed to be having a great time playing tonight, as she called audibles and moved songs in the set around, letting Steinberg and Blade know what was coming next and shuffling charts on top of her piano. Sitting stage right and slightly over her shoulder, it was hypnotizing watching her fingers dance across the piano keys while the reflection in the piano mirrored the action. As the set closed out with “Comes Love” and “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66” it made the mind wander what could be awaiting us for the encore. Without much fanfare or wait, Krall and crew took the stage and played through two final songs, “Almost Blue” and another personal favorite “Departure Bay” which was penned by Diana and her spouse Elvis Costello. This show had ZING written all over it before I entered the theatre and even now a day later, I am still cherishing the tantalizing aural gems I heard and enjoyed the other night. Here’s hoping I get the chance to do it all over again sometime soon!
