Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Hi Fi Way, You Am I are presenting their “Hi Fi Daily Double Down” show – second and third albums Hi Fi Way and Hourly Daily played in full, with a couple of bonuses at the end.
And not a moment too soon!
It’s election night in Australia, and after a month of bluster, rhetoric, backflips, accusations, lies and unsolicited spam texts the country is completely sick and tired of the Federal Election, and with the emphatic Labour win called before the show even kicked off, we’re all grateful for some rock n’ roll truth to take our minds off it.
With not a ballot paper in sight, here’s the only boxes we needed to tick off tonight:
- Andy Kent playing his bass with a bow like a cello to start Hourly Daily (being the mellower album, it goes first) and being rock solid throughout
- Tim Rogers, looking as louche as fuck – and dressed “as Blanche from The Golden Girls” he laughs – throwing Townshend windmills around his guitar
- Rusty Hopkinson’s drumming like a cross between Keith Moon, Buddy Rich and Animal from The Electric Mayhem
- Davey Lane being the consummate musician and perfect musical foil for Rogers
- The quartet having proper fun
- The crowd singing along passionately, especially on the irresistible choruses, as many revisited their glory days
- Rogers going full peak Jagger at one point, complete with maracas
- Cathy’s Clown including a bit of Adam’s Rib from debut album Sound As Ever
- A huge ending with Rumble and Berlin Chair bringing the house down to finish the encore
