Checking out a band I haven’t seen at one of my favorite venues in the world is always a good time.  While it always feels like a homecoming when I walk through the doors of The Shop, it truly is a homecoming when Waylon Revis and his band A Killer’s Confession makes an appearance.  Tonight’s show had some surprises and reunions attached to it guaranteed to please fans of Waylon, his band, and his career.  The evening kicked off with a cool set from newcomers LYLVC (pronounced Lylac).  The blended harsh and clean vocals from the duo up front perfectly offset the musical component of their set.  What they may lack inexperience, they make up for with energy and enthusiasm.  After their set, Gemini Syndrome frontman Aaron Nordstrom entertained the crowd with a solo set that included a piano section and a guitar section accompanying his vocals on songs from his catalog as well as some cover material.  His set allowed for his vocals to shine through overtop the stripped back and more simplistic sound.

This show was advertised and heavily promoted for A Killer’s Confession with the addition of a few special guests… Wayne Reavis brought along a couple friends on this leg of the tour with Rick ‘Stitch’ Thomas and J-Mann from Mushroomhead joining him for select songs during middle and later parts of the set.  Here in Flint, we also saw Daniel Fox jump behind the kit for a couple tracks as well.  Reavis and his band worked through some great AKC material with hazers, masks, and attitude to boot.  The overall vibe of the set progressed nicely with no one – the band members, the guests, or the audience – pushing the show along.  Aaron Nordstrom even joined Wayne and his band on stage for a couple of songs during the set.  While the imagery and sound are familiar to fans of Reavis, A Killer’s Confession, and his former band Mushroomhead, there was something different tonight.  The interaction with the crowd was purposeful and full of promise, anecdotes, and messages of friendship and camaraderie, especially as the set worked toward the ‘reunion” part of the show.  Mind you, if you talk to any of the guys on this show tonight, they will tell you this show is more than just getting together with some old friends and playing some of their classic tracks from days gone by… when these guys walk into The Machine Shop with any project, it is a homecoming for their home away from home.  Flint, MI has welcomed Reavis, A Killer’s Confession, and all the special guests in their various bands and incarnations.  Tonight was nothing short of a Christmas miracle witnessing what many thought impossible for years.  All of that aside, the band supporting the show cannot be dismissed, as they brought energy, musicianship, and just enough crazy to help decorate the evenings musical landscape alongside the frontmen that graced the stage.  Hopefully, other bands will see the magic taking place between former members and friends and help bridge some of those gaps as time passes.
