Playing to an intimate but highly enthused crowd Claudio Simonetti and Goblin immediately started into a few scores from the movie Demons before stopping for a second to talk about the movie and his time as a movie score composer. The expertise and experience he exudes while playing the synthesizers has always been a wonderful experience live. This was the third time I have been fortunate to catch him perform. Growing up as an avid prog rock fan and horror movie junkie with my main love in the Italian Giallo genre being my favorite; Goblin has always been one of those bands I try and always go out of my way to catch a performance from. The evening was filled with short stories about scenes from the movies he was performing the songs from and video screen in the background playing at the same time with lovely moments of classic horror from the movies he was performing for the evening. The second time he stopped he talked about his work scoring the movie Dawn of the Dead for George Romero and his childhood love of the movie genre and how fortunate he was to have been able to help create the mood for such iconic films.
A few extra treats of the evening. After playing a few numbers from a few other movies he jumped into a few tracks from Goblins second album and for the first time performed the track “Goblin” live from that album. Once he was finished with those he teased the crowd and played a combined cover of John Carpenter’s “Halloween Theme” from the movie Halloween and Mike Oldfield’s song “Tubular Bells” which was in the movie The Exorcist. Upon finishing up the covers he then went into pieces from the movies Tenebre, Phenomena, and Terrordrome before ending the evening with the main theme from the movies Susperia and Profondo Rosso. If anyone is interested in movie score work and excellent instrumental prog rock. I highly recommend catching Claudio Simonetti perform.
