My musical taste buds have always bee na little varied and my like of the latest EP from Penny Bored adds to that diversity. While not a ‘rock’ record, there are certainly elements woven into the track that carry a rock flavor as well as some hooky pop and punk splashes that add to the discs catchy nature. Disc opener “On Hold” has some cool guitar and attitude wrapped into the track underneath the pop-filled keyboard swirl that carries the track. Penny’s vocals are a cool ethereal sound that floats above the mix and allows you to dig into the song sonically and lyrically. “Think Of Me” is contagious and has some cool guitars, bass, and drums oven together under the vocals that carries the track from open to close. The layered background vocals on the chorus add texture to the song while the lyrics are a bit of pop and sweet swirled together in the mix. “Disconnected” is asolid pop track that draws you in with almost hypnotic vocals combined with some keyboard on the verses before the chorus hits and builds the sensation without overpowering the song and collection sonically. This is a nice midway piece that allows you to really dig into (and enjoy) Penny’s vocals. “Gossip,” the EP’s second single, is a pop keyboard laden track that shows a slightly different side of the singer without deviating from the path cut by the rest of the disc. The layered anthemic approach to the chorus is a cool addition that adds a little punch to the overall syrupy song. Disc closer and kickoff single “Dance In Hell” was my first exposure to Penny Bored’s music and caught my attention. This guitar driven track features a bit of the punk DNA that is laced into some of the other tracks and demonstrates a cool blend of pop, punk, and some rock leanings in the guitar work. The vocals perfectly tie together the musical component of the track creating a contagious track that begs you to playt it time and time again.
