JUSTIN BURFORD PRESENTS ‘COME AS YOU ARE’ ON THE 30th ANNIVERSARY OF KURT COBAIN’S PASSING

Nirvana was the biggest and loudest band of the 90s. However, it was their stripped-back, iconic MTV Unplugged performance that would launch them into the stratospheric mainstream.

On the eve of the 30th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s passing, ARIA award-winning musician and performer, Justin Burford, returns with COME AS YOU ARE: Unplugged & Beyond – a lovingly meticulous recreation of that legendary broadcast, live on stage.

Surrounded by candles and lilies, Burford and his band of stellar musicians lead the audience through a very special evening, including an encore set of even more beloved Nirvana favourites.

“Unplugged was a pivotal moment for Nirvana,” Burford says. “It gave them an opportunity to completely redefine themselves. For Kurt in particular. That performance almost single-handedly shaped his enduring memory in popular culture as the quiet, unassuming, charismatic, and genuinely funny guy he truly was. His authenticity and vulnerability really shone through.

In my opinion, Unplugged is a big reason why he remains such a beloved and relevant figure all these years later. It’s that essence that I’ve tried to capture with this show.”

Unplugged was filmed on November 18, 1993, at Sony Studios in New York City. Cobain passed away five months later in April 1994. It was eventually broadcast on MTV and released as an album at the end of that year. The world was still reeling at his loss and the funereal mood of both the performance and the setting has ensured that Unplugged is forever wrapped in the wake of Kurt Cobain’s passing.

As such, on Cobain’s 30th anniversary the stage is set for COME AS YOU ARE: Unplugged & Beyond to be a remarkably poignant event.

“I can’t imagine a more fitting way of commemorating this milestone,” says Burford.

“Kurt Cobain and Nirvana meant so much to so many and continue to do so. While he was often described as the reluctant voice of a generation, I feel like history has proven that voice continues to speak to generations still. That’s what this show is all about, celebrating the man, the music, and that voice.”

COME AS YOU ARE: Unplugged & Beyond is a not-to-be-missed Nirvana experience for fans of all ages.
