I couldn’t wait for the Steve Miller Band tour stop in Clearwater this year for a couple reasons.  I love checking out a “new to me” venue and I have been curious about The Sound since they opened earlier this year while I was back in MI for the summer.  Toss in a concert with classic rocker Steve Miller Band and you are sure to get an evening full of hits and some great fun.  Finally, opener Samantha Fish is one of those shows I always try to catch if I am in the area.  Like clockwork, Samantha with Jesse Dayton and their band took the stage and ripped through their set including the seminal rock classic “Kick Out The Jams” which is not lost on this Michigan guy.  The music was awesome, especially when they played Samantha’s rocker “Bulletproof,” which happens to be my favorite from her catalog.  While I dig her solo material, hearing a small handful of songs from her latest release – a joint effort with Jesse – Death Wish Blues, you couldn’t go wrong with these two great blues guitarists at the helm.  While the bill for the dates promoted Samantha, there was no doubt this time on stage was a joint effort between the two guitarists and their band as they played track after track making the most of their limited time on stage.

After very little stage turnover, the time approached for Steve Miller and his band to take their rightful place on The Sound’s stage to entertain a packed pavilion area and a lot of standing crowd.  From the opening strains of “Swingtown” we were all off and running on a hit and memory filled evening.  Hit after hit rolled from the bands instruments, through the perfect sounding system, and then washed over the crowd.  Next up was a cool tandem of “Jungle Love” and “Living in the U.S.A.,” with the latter featuring some cool jamming from Miller and crew.  These songs have aged perfectly and sound as good now as they ever have live, coming through the speakers in the office, or blasting through the car speakers.  Other hits and fan favorites decorated the Thursday evening musical landscape leading to my favorite of the catalog and set “Abracadabra” packing as much punch as it did the first time I heard the track on Casey’s Top 40 back in the summer of ’82.  Other monster hits including “Jet Airliner,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” and “Dance, Dance, Dance.”  After other songs made their way into the set and were played to great audience response, Miller and his band worked through and closed the set with arguably two of Steve’s biggest hits with “Take the Money and Run” and “The Joker” before encore and final song of the evening “Rock’n Me.”  While tour dates in 2023 are closing out, be sure to keep an eye on 2024 and be sure to these guys out when they hit your area on The Stadium Tour next summer.
