Closing out 2022’s concert season, I was treated to one of the best shows of the year.  Taylor Dayne and her band brought a bag full of hits, a handful of stories, and the perfect amount of energy and enthusiasm.  After a short opening from local drag queen Daphne Ferraro, the anticipation built as the moment for Taylor to hit the stage grew and the electricity in the air intensified on a Sunday evening in St. Petersburg, FL.  After the band ripped through an instrumental medley of her hits, she joined them on stage and proceeded to belt out hit after hit beginning with “With Every Beat of My Heart,” the opening track from her sophomore album Can’t Fight Fate.  Rolling through her set with songs from her early catalog, Taylor dipped into her debut with “Do You Want It Right Now ” setting the pace for a mix of songs from her first two discs with a couple extras thrown in for good measure.  Keeping the rotation of songs from her first and second releases, Dayne launched into the energy pumping “Heart of Stone” followed by “Don’t Rush Me” before slowing the pace slightly for a killer live rendition of “I’ll Always Love You.”  The energy Taylor put into her performance was undeniable and it was obvious that every smile was whole hearted and from the heart.  Next in the set is my personal favorite track from her lengthy catalog – “I’ll Be Your Shelter.”  There is something about the track that gets my foot tapping, my head banging, and I find myself singing along at the top of my lungs every time.  Shifting gears and digging into a cover for the next track, the heartfelt decision to perform Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” held special meaning for so many in the crowd as Taylor sprinkled the track with the name of many singers and performers that have passed asway over the years, whether her peer, influence, or just a musical force with the most recent named being Taylor Hawkins and Olivia Newton-John.  The song must hold additional meaning in light of Dayne’s recent diagnosis and victory over her recent cancer diagnosis.  After hitting us with “Born to Sing,” she closed the main portion of her set with “Prove Your Love” and “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love” from the amazing release 1993’s Soul Dancing.  Saving the best for last, Taylor played arguably her two biggest hits “Tell It to My Heart” and “Love Will Lead You Back” to close out the show.  If this show was any indication, there is no slowing Dayne as she brought 2022’s touring season to a close in FL and readies for what 2023 is to offer.  I only hope it is another show within my area.
