I dig strolling into a ‘new to me’ venue to check out some artists than my normal fare. This past Wednesday was exactly one of those nights. I made my way to Tampa, FL and entered The Ritz Ybor with The Knocks and Cannons on the agenda. After getting situated I made my way to the front to check out the opener Juliana Madrid who handled her time on stage nicely singing and playing both electric and acoustic guitar on some cool tracks that the early crowd seemed to get into.
After her allotted time, the stage was converted and readied for Cannons. While I was familiar with their more recent catalog before the show, I was not ready to be converted into a big fan before the night was over. The trio – singer Michelle Joy, guitarist Ryan Clapham and bassist / keyboardist Paul Davis along with a touring drummer – made the venue home for the evening… not a far stretch as Michelle was born and raised in Tampa. The group let their music do the talking this evening, pulling out songs from throughout their catalog to please fans new and old and themselves. It was enjoyable to watch the smiles wash over faces from the front of the venue to the back and from side to side, but also the stage at times. Visually the lighting added depth to the performance, but the real star of the show was the music and the way it brought the group together with the audience and gave us all some moments together singing, dancing, and just enjoying. The trio pulled one track from their debut release, but peppered eight songs from their latest 2022’s Fever Dream, including personal favorites set opener “Goodbye,” “Bad Dream,” and “Ruthless.” After winding through their set and playing songs that stirred the crowd to sing along throughout the evening, the bad dug in and closed out their performance with arguably their most popular track “Fire For You.”
Another quick set change took place and soon headliners The Knocks brought their show to a packed Ritz Ybor. Without fanfare, the duo hit the stage and proclaimed they were throwing a dance party tonight and we were all in attendance. While not overly familiar with the guys and their music, they were entertaining and kept the crowd moving throughout their time on stage. The music is blended and swirled as if creating an ethereal mix that keeps the mood light, the times good, and the crowd up. The overall vibe was heightened at moments when songs and mixes were performed that hit high notes with the audience, but that isn’t to say there were ever heavy or downtrodden moments. This was a welcomed enjoyable evening filled with music, dancing, and overall good vibes.
Cannons Setlist: Goodbye – Come Alive – Baby – Shadows – Bad Dream – Talk Talk – Ruthless – Can You Feel It – Love on the Ground – Strangers – Spells – Hurricane – Tunnel Of You – Golden – Purple Sun – Evening Star – Fire for You
