Grammy winning Tedeschi Trucks Band brought their mix of blues and rock to a packed TCU Amphitheater. The 12-piece ensemble is out on their Wheels of Soul 2022 tour in support of their latest release I Am the Moon an ambitious quadruple album series, a byproduct of the pandemic down time. The series is conceptually based on the Persian poem The Story Layla and Majnun. Part I Crescent was released June 3rd and the remaining three will be released individually from now through August 26. Each album has an ebb and flow, but cohesive reaching a conclusion in Part IV Farewell. Gabe Dixon and Los Lobos got things started on what was a beautiful summer night. As the sun set in the background, the band took the stage debuting “Playing With My Emotions.” The audience rose to their feet not just for the onset, but for the entire performance. Susan Tedeschi powerful vocals exuded emotion and soul as she was the focal point on stage. Mike Mattison sang lead on few songs adding to the diversity and depth of the band. Derek Trucks was on lead guitar. A generational talent, he considered by many to be one of the finest guitarists of all time. His distinctive jaw-dropping solos are nothing short of amazing. His use of a glass bottle slide reflects his southern rock old school roots. The band is supported by a horn section, keyboardist Gabe Dixon, bassist Brandon Boone and drummers Isaac Eady and Tyler Greenwell. The tight knit group harmonized beautifully and appeared to be enjoying themselves as much as the captivated crowd. Their unique setlist included songs from their latest release, a few covers and hits from their four studio albums. David Hildago from Los Lobos joined them on stage for “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad.” They next played I Am the Moon: I Crescent in its entirety. They concluded the nearly two-hour performance with an encore “Bound for Glory.” The current tour covers 28 US cities before heading to Europe in October. To really experience Tedeschi Trucks you need to get out and see a live show, they never disappoint!
