A Dirty Dozen with EAST OF EADO – July 2022
According to a recent press release: “Houston, TX’s East Of Eado have released their new album Sonic Remedy. Voted ‘Best Local Band’ by Houston Chronicle readers in 2021, the 5-piece rockers accurately describe themselves as “Slice of life Alt Rock.” On the new 10-track album, the band is reunited with producer Sean O’Keefe (Fall Out Boy, Hawthorne Heights) who they worked with on their 2020 Lost In Imagination EP. With anthemic choruses and themes centered around self-reflection, the album explores responses to the challenges and triumphs of young adulthood.” We get the band to discuss new music, influences, and more…
1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets you put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?
Sonic Remedy is our debut record that we recorded at the famous Sonic Ranch studios in West Texas. It was produced and mixed by platinum record producer Sean O’Keefe (known for his work with Fall Out Boy, Hawthorne Heights, Plain White T’s, and Beach Bunny). On the intro to track 4 “Sleepless,” there’s actually a marimba part that we put in at the last minute. The title of track 10″ Time X Time” is an homage to the anime Hunter X Hunter, and a lot of these songs were influenced by Japanese Rock. Half of the lyrics were written during an eventful trip to the UK by our singer, Alex Gefers.
2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?
Our passion blossomed at different stages of life for all of us but we have always had in us since we were kids. Sam (drummer) grew up listening to Weezer records in the car with his older brother. Alex (singer) remembers listening to The Who with his dad. Trey’s family has worked in the music business promoting different Houston rap artists since he was little. Kevin (Rhythm Guitar) always loved The Beatles and The Rolling Stones and Patrick (lead guitar) would jam to Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park all the time.
3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?
We love 90’s and 2000’s alternative rock (Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World, Blink 182, Green Day, etc) but love subtly incorporating other elements from different eras/genres into our music (80’s reverb, metal screams, and Red Hot Chili Pepper’s style raps).
4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?
Dave Grohl would be a dream collab for all of us! He’s such a versatile musician and generally awesome person. To be able to play drums for Nirvana and then switch over to the Foo Fighters is truly legendary.
5. What is your favorite activity when out of the studio and/or not on tour? What do you like to do to unwind?
A lot of us like to hit the links for some golf and we’re all huge anime fans and binge it religiously.
6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?
Anthemy Alternative Rock with 80’s Reverb and 2000’s Nostalgia. We’ve been described as a feel good band with melancholic undertones. As far as comps, I think we’ve gotten Thrice before, we like their stuff but they’re a little more angsty/heavy.
7. When your band is hanging out together, who cooks, who gets the drinks in, and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?
Alex (singer) for sure cooks, Kevin (Rhythm Guitar) puts away the beers, and Sam (drums) busts out the acoustic.
8. When was the last time you were starstruck and who was it?
While we were recording at Sonic Ranch, we ran into Boy Pablo! Such nice and humble guys despite having hundreds of millions of streams and world tours. Their songs are amazingly catchy too. We almost couldn’t believe it was real.
9. What is the best part of being a musician? If you could no longer be a musician for whatever reason, what would be your dream job?
Expressing yourself through music and being able to make music with your friends! Alex would be chef. Trey would be a voiceover actor. Kevin would be a golfer. Sam would work in broadcasting or production. And Patrick would be an audio engineer.
10. What is one question you have always wanted an interviewer to ask – and what is the answer? Conversely, what question are you tired of answering?
If you could open for anybody who would it be? Asian Kung-Fu Generation LIVE IN TOKYO. And we get tired of “how did you guys meet?” Just because it wasn’t really a moment, we were just separately friends with each other and slowly started jamming.
11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over,” even if it didn’t change your current situation?
We would do more research on our first music video, the guy didn’t have enough experience and it showed in the final product. We never released it. Always do your homework before hiring.
12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?
Ooooh hard question, but probably Enema of the State by Blink 182. So many legendary songs on that record! Seeing it come together would be absolutely amazing!
