Chris Young brought his great show and catalog to Toledo, OH to bolster Fan Fest during the 2021 Solheim Cup, performing on the first day of golf, but was the second night headliner on the Promenade Park stage.  As the gray skies set in over the horizon as I traveled the 2-1/4 hours to get to the show, I wondered whether they would get the show off before the rains came.  Taking the stage about 30 minutes earlier than originally anticipated, the band hit the stage with guitars blazing, fronted by Chris – armed with his killer baritone and an acoustic guitar.  With lights galore, great songs, and a band that aptly anchored the songs, this was a show to behold.  I spoke with several CY fans, self proclaimed Country fans, and just concert goers that wanted to get out to see a live show, and that they did.  He moved through three hits before rolling into a cover to break up his hits and then rolled back into more.  He was all smiles and even chatted up the crowd a bit discussing his first #1 hit “Gettin’ You Home (The Black Dress Song).”  How good is your catalog that your first huge hit is the second song in your set?  Yes – it is that good.  He explained his hate – love relationship with the number 37 in the middle of the track.  Apparently, his first two singles peaked at 37 but then this one hit and went to #1 for 37 weeks.  Not a bad run for your third single.  As the third tune cranked up, so did the rain droplets.  While it didn’t downpour, it was certainly enough to dampen some clothing, but not the spirits of Young or the fans.  Unfortunately, with camera gear and lenses in hand, it wasn’t to be for me to hang for the entire show.  I will say this though – just hearing and photographing the first three tracks, hearing a fourth while packing my gear, and a fifth and sixth while walking my gear to the car – it was worth the 4-1/2 hour round trip drive to see him perform once again and I cannot wait until the schedule aligns again and I can go catch another Chris Young show full of hits and surprises.
