Venue: The Machine Shop

City: Flint, MI

Date: September 12, 2021

Review and Photographs by: Todd “Toddstar” Jolicoeur (www.toddstarphotography.com)

A crazy rainy Sunday drive from Lexington, MI to Flint, MI found me on dry land and ready to rock.  First up once I arrived was Michigan rockers Kaleido fronted by Cristina Chriss.  Always a great live show, Kaleido brings modern radio rock that is pleasing to the ears and good for the soul.  A drum solo in the middle of their set is odd for an opener, but expected when they come to town, especially at The Shop.  Next up was Infected Rain who hit that stage hard and impressed me with their sonic attack on the crowd as well as the way they worked the show and their allotted time on stage.  Front woman Lena Scissorhands controlled not only her vocals and stage presence, but the flow of the show.  Last up were the Butcher Babies and all they brought to entertain the large crowd at the venue.

Home state girl Carla Harvey and co-front woman Heidi Shepard did what they do best — rock the hell out of the crowd and prove once again that girls can throw down as good as the boys any day of the week.  With a good catalog to pull from they entertained the crowd with old tracks and new.  The set was heavy with tracks from the bands debut album Goliath, with nine of the evenings songs culled from that disc, including the first two songs of the night “I Smell a Massacre” and “The Mirror Never Lies.”  The band finished the opening trifecta with “Monsters Ball” from their sophomore effort Take It Like A Man.  A couple newer tracks peppered the setlist was well, including  recent single “It’s Killin’ Time Baby.”  Guitarist Henry Flurry helped hold down the melody throughout the set while Chase Brickenden and Ricky Bonazza anchored the evening with thunderous and thumping bottom end.  A solid one-two-three punch of “C8h18 (Gasoline),” “Grim Sleeper,” and “In Denial” slammed a ton of heavy into the middle of the set and kept the energy high and the rock solid. After another handful of tunes, the band closed out the evening with “Magnolia Blvd.” from their debut.  Butcher Babies always show up ready to rock and do just that from the minute they hit the stage until the final vocal has been sung, final note played, and the crowd has been properly rocked.  This tour may be the ‘Butcher Babies vs. Goliath’ tour, but the real winners are the crowds getting out there to see the shows.

Setlist: I Smell a Massacre – The Mirror Never Lies – Monsters Ball – C8h18 (Gasoline) – Grim Sleeper – In Denial – Bottom of a Bottle – The Deathsurround – Dead Poet – Axe Wound – It’s Killin’ Time, Baby! – Yorktown – They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa! – Magnolia Blvd.
