A Dirty Dozen with ARTIFAS – September 2021

| 2 September 2021 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “Hard rock band ARTIFAS released the official music video for their new single “CUT ME OUT”! The single is from their forthcoming album titled Reflections due out November 19, 2021. American Hard Rock band Artifas was formed in 2011 in Jackson, TN by lead guitarist Cody Criswell and lead vocalist Scottie Somerville. In the months following, the two founders of the group would immediately recruit an assortment of hometown musicians and begin looking to record their debut EP. After having a long and ugly encounter that resulted in the theft of all the bands funds and receiving no album in return, the original incarnation of the group would spend 2012-2013 doing several independent tours and writing music. After debuting with their EP Enemy Inside in 2013 and doing numerous regional/national tours in support of it, the band replaced former members with guitarist Mikey Miller, bassist Anthony Mattox, and drummer Jared Wainscott.” We get the band to discuss new music, influences, and more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

There’s a lot of little things that happen in the background of the song. The cool thing about it is you can always hear something new with every listen. There’s a lot to be discovered. We think the diehard fans may not find any hidden nuggets per say, but we believe they will notice the energy being captured better than ever before.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

It’s different for each one of us, but at the base of it we would have to say live music. Nothing will draw you in as a kid like seeing a super dope band play and watching the crowd go wild. Music grabbed a hold of us at a young age, and we’ve never looked back.

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

There are many albums and artists that have guided our musical taste. Within the band we have a wide variety of musical interests. We pull inspiration from all across the spectrum, everything from Garth Brooks to Megadeth.

4. Who would be your main five musical influences?

We’d say Karnivool, Periphery, Red, Twelve Foot Ninja, and Sevendust.

5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

Right now I think we would pick Tom Macdonald. Really like how he speaks his mind and is taking over the rap world as an independent artist while a lot of the industry is trying to shut him out.

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

Artifas is high energy Djent Rock with strong melodies and a lot of emotion. I don’t think we’ve ever had a comparison that made us cringe. Most of the time it’s really dope to hear what bands we get compared to.

7. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

The best thing about being a musician is getting to do what you love, and the free therapy. Music to us is our release. It’s a way for us to express ourselves.

8. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Mikey cooks while playing guitar. Jared and Cody get the drinks in. Anthony is filming us being dumbasses, and Scottie busts out the acoustic.

9. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?

Probably when we played in Vegas. We were mid song and looked over side stage to find Vinny Paul standing and watching us while banging his head. He came up to us after and said, “bad ass show bro”!

10. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Mikey: To be Gordon Ramsey; Cody: Park Ranger at the Grand Canyon; Anthony: Porn Director; Scottie: CSI Investigator/Detective; and Jared: Drum Tech

11.  Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?

There are far too many to list. Our time in the music industry is a constant learning experience. We would definitely do some things different if we could go back, but at the same time all the hard lessons have made us who we are today.

12.  If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

I would definitely choose Sound Awake by Karnivool. This is not only one of my favorite albums, but it’s also one of my favorite sounding albums. This album is at the absolute top for me.
