ALMOST A Dirty Dozen with SHAUN GLASS from REPENTANCE – October 2020
According to a recent press release: “Repentance came together in 2018 when Shaun Glass, a veteran guitarist of Broken Hope and Dirge Within, recruited Mike Sylvester on bass and began songwriting with lead guitarist Markus Johansson of the group Them. Robb Rivera of Nonpoint introduced Stuck Mojo front-man Robby J. Fonts and from there… Repentance was born. The band made their live stage debut by opening up for Trivium. Within their short time together the band would go on to share the stage with Devildriver, Jinjer, Skull Fist, Toxic Holocaust and Sacred Reich. In October 2018 the band released their debut single, “Enter the Gallows” and by the end of the year, Kanky Lora, of Soulfly and Straight Line Stitch fame, would join the band on drums, thus solidifying this powerhouse line-up.” We get Shaun to discuss new music, influences, and much more…
1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?
God For A Day I think truly shows the listener how much aggression & true ENERGY these songs have. So many metal bands lack that nowadays & I feel we have captured that on our album. No hidden nuggets but tons of subtle ear candy in the mix for the listener to enjoy.
2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?
When I first heard KISS.. My cousin showed the Alive! album & it blew me away on every level. It made me want to learn how to play music.
3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?
KISS – Alive! And seeing them for my first concert with Judas Priest who made me a huge fan that night as well.
4. Who would be your main five musical influences?
James Hetfield, Dimebag Darrell, Piggy, Michael Schenker, and Chuck Schuldiner.
5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?
I would love to collaborate with Dave Mustaine / Megadeth as I think we could write a slamming song!
6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?
Dark Aggressive Groove!!!! I saw someone compare us to Misery Index which isn’t cringey but I don’t hear that at all.
7. What’s the best thing about being a musician?
Creating songs that others enjoy. I’m proud of my works past & present.
8. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?
I would say when I met Gene Simmons backstage @ a Anthrax gig. Scott Ian introduced me and I was pretty nervous.
9. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?
Probably a well paid PRODUCER 😉
10. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?
Honestly no because every step has been what it’s meant to be. It’s more so others I feel in my past have made some BAD moves.
11. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?
I would say KISS – Destroyer. That album still to this day is quite iconic & is awesome. I’m sure the creation of that album was intense and the producer Bob Ezrin did a amazing job.
