According to a recent press release: “Today, California death metal force SKELETAL REMAINS release the new single “Illusive Divinity” from their fourth studio album The Entombment Of Chaos, out September 11. SKELETAL REMAINS formed as Anthropophagy back in 2011, released two acclaimed albums through German label FDA Rekotz and honed their skills on the road, playing an impressive amount of gigs and tours early on in the band’s career. In 2018, the band took the proverbial next step, releasing their third record, Devouring Mortality, on Dark Descent in North America and Century Media internationally. Having toured with the likes of Obituary, Hatebreed, Municipal Waste, Power Trip, The Black Dahlia Murder, and many more, SKELETAL REMAINS have succeeded in building up a loyal following worldwide and will now excite their supporters once again with a strong sonic statement.” We get lead guitarist Mike to discuss new music, influences, and much more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

The Entombment of Chaos is a pretty straight forward Death Metal album that still contains that Skeletal Remains groove, speed and technicality though turned up a bit. Since this is the first material with my input in it since our very first demo the writing prices were definitely a bit different but not so much to completely change the style in which SR has created through the years. I, along with Chris, had gone through some pretty life changing heavy shit that fucked us up mentally for quite some time and you can definitely hear that anger and rage come through some of the songs both musically and vocally.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realize you wanted to be a musician?

Music has just always been there in our everyday moments since I can remember. My dad and I would watch MTV back when it was actual Music Television and I would mimic all the music videos on toy guitars or my mom’s Tupperware even borrowing the camcorder to film my own music videos in my room singing System of a Down’s – “Spiders” or going ape shit on Metallica’s – “Shortest Straw”. Since then I knew music was my calling.

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

That would definitely be Metallica’s …And Justice For All. My dad would blast that album while washing his truck or doing yard/housework. I would just sit there in front of the stereo listening to the CD all the way through over and over again. From then on, I needed more and I needed heavier.

4. Who would be your main five musical influences?

That’s tough because there are way too many to name, but Erik Rutan is my number one along with Trey Azagthoth, Chuck Schuldiner, Luc Lemay and the mighty James Murphy! Just to name a few.

5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

Erik fucking Rutan! \m/ The dude is just bad ass all around what more can I say? Ha-ha

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

Just heavy shit that’s the best I could describe it ha-ha. I think the one that gets me the most are the people who come up and say “Oh you play that Screamo music” I mean I won’t lose my shit on anybody who says it I’ll just laugh it off and say “yeah man ” ha-ha

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

None of us cook so we order out either Pizza or Chipotle and as for drinks we mainly do water or Starbucks with beer being special occasions. Not very exciting I know ha-ha

8. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?

Peter Tägtgren the last time Hypocrisy played here in LA we got to chill with them backstage. So cool!

9. What is the best part of being a musician? If you could no longer be a musician for whatever reason, what would be your dream job?

The best part is meeting so many awesome musicians along with being able to tour with some of our heroes. If I weren’t a musician, I’d probably be a mechanic of some sort.

10. What is one question you have always wanted an interviewer to ask – and what is the answer? Conversely, what question are you tired of answering?

Hmm I’ve never thought about that. I guess I don’t really have one to be honest ha-ha sorry. I haven’t had this question much, but I don’t like anything political. I like to keep the band as far away from politics as possible.

11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?

That would be the LA Strikefest we played a couple years back. I was super sick and played like absolute shit. That’s one show I’d love to forget. I’m sure there are a few people who remember that one.

12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Damn now that’s a tough one. Honestly anything at Morrisound Studios between 1990-1996 All those bands and albums are the reason we do what we do!!
