I have to be perfectly honest, until this EP rolled across my desk, I was not familiar with Sven Gali. I figured, what the hell, it’s four songs and less than 16 minutes. Disc opener “Kill The Lies” is a solid rocker that kicks the disc off in good fashion. The blend of modern rock sound and a straightforward rock vibe gets the foot tapping and keeps your attention from open to close. The groove of this track has a Three Days Grace feel, but hey, I dig them too! The guitars from Andy Frank and Sean Williamson crunch while the rhythm section anchors the track underneath the vocals. “You Won’t Break Me” takes off with a heavy bottom end from bassist Shawn Minden and drummer Dan Fila while Dave Wanless’ vocals soar above the mix, especially on the chorus. This track also benefits from aggressive guitars swirled into the fray. “Now” is all guitars from the onset and combines different grooves, textures, and sounds. This one takes me back to the late 90’s / early 00’s when bands like Union Underground and Crazytown delivered a similar nu-metal rock peppered with industrial undertones sound. This one is sure to be a hit when played live, as I think this will get crowds moving from front to back and side to side. Disc closer “Hurt” brings back a solid rock sound and vibe to close out the collection with guitar riffs and vocals that recall the sound of metal and hard rock I cut my teeth on in the mid-80’s and later in the 2000’s with a resurgence of the sound (reminds me of Fatal Smile). These guys cover several bases sonically at the same time, giving them an edge – and an unexpected addition to my summer listening!
