Shinedown decided to tack on a date at Toledo’s Huntington Center and I couldn’t wait to check out the show. Traveling with the band on this routing were openers Savage After Midnight, Asking Alexandria, and Papa Roach. Openers Savage After Midnight brought a truncated set full of cool tunes and some good rock and roll attitude that will serve them well as they cut their teeth while working their way up the ranks. Asking Alexandria hit the stage and they put on a great show, as usual. There is nothing negative to be said about the energy and dedication of the band when it comes to entertaining the crowd – whether fans of their band or not. They poured every ounce of energy into their performance and had to win over some new fans with their set. Papa Roach did what they do best – they came out running full bore on all cylinders and the band didn’t let up until their allotted time on stage was done. They brought new tunes and the same old rock and roll swagger they always seem to have when they land in Toledo. The crowd ate up their set and the energy that flowed from stage to crowd and back again was obvious. After their set, the kabuki was dropped while the stage was set for tonight’s headliner and you could feel the energy and anticipation grow as the moment approached for Shinedown to take their place on stage.
From the second the lights dropped and the first notes of “Devil” rang through the sound system, the band was off and running. The band was on fire and sounded perfect as they shifted gears and ripped into one of my personal Shinedown favorites – “Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom).” The song raised the energy quotient for the opening of the show and brought the capacity crowd and band together, as witnessed by the flow of excitement from the stage across the main floor up the back of the Huntington Center and back to the stage. With the set being comprised of hits old and new, there were 17 reasons for the fans to sing, headbang, dance, and enjoy a Sunday night in Toledo. With five tracks from the bands latest disc in the set, we definitely got treated to some new material, including the set opener, “Monsters,” “Get Up,” the title track “Attention Attention,” and set closer “Brilliant.” Peppered between the new songs were other songs from their catalog, including four songs from 2012’s Amaryllis and three songs from 2015’s Threat To Survival. “Enemies” sounded perfect, but the emotionally charged lyrics and delivery of “I’ll Follow You” took the show to the next level. After a rousing rendition of “45,” the band tore through “Bully.” Two tracks that made Shinedown radio stars made an appearance in the set as Smith, Myers, Kerch, and Bass took us through the “Second Chance” and “Sound Of Madness.” One cover decorated the musical landscape as Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” made the rounds again in the bands set. From the earlier referenced Threat To Survival, the band pulled “State Of My Head” and “Cut The Cord” helping round out the set. These guys are the most consistent… show after show and year after year. Here’s hoping I don’t have to wait too long to see them live again.
Shinedown Setlist: Devil – Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom) – Enemies – Monsters – I’ll Follow You – Attention Attention – Unity – 45 – Bully – Misfits – State of My Head – Second Chance – Simple Man – Cut the Cord – Get Up – Sound of Madness – Brilliant
