On paper it’s a dream team – DeVito and Schwarzenegger teaming up again after the success of Twins and with a cavalcade of winners between them, Director/Producer Ivan Reitman boasting a CV which included Heavy Metal, Animal House, Stripes, Ghostbusters, Kindergarten Cop – and boasting Emma Thompson’s admirable chops, to boot.
But nope, Junior is a stinker.
Arnie is Alex Hesse, who works with DeVito’s Larry Arbogast in developing a hormone drug which will allow women a much stronger chance of seeing a pregnancy to full term, but they are denied the right to test the drug on a human subject. Arnie steps up and allows Arbogast to implant an embryo in him and sees it through to full term.
Junior is just about every bit as insensitive and inappropriate as it sounds, with the majority of the ‘humour’ revolving around Arnie whinging insensitively about how difficult it is for him to be pregnant, and hiding the condition from everybody as best he clunkily can.
It’s not very funny, not very clever, and not very respectfully handled.
Co-writer Kevin Conrad would go on to write a handful of episodes for and be executive producer for Blue Bloods for well over a very successful 100 episodes, but he sure didn’t get the gig based on the script for this doozy.
