Umphrey’s McGee performed Saturday night to a capacity crowd at the Lawn in Indy. Though currently based in Chicago, the group formed in 1997 while at nearby Notre Dame. They have a large and very loyal fan base especially here in Indiana. They usually make a yearly stop in the area that is always well received and tonight was no exception. It was a seasonably cool night for August, feeling more like early Fall. A classic jam band, each show takes on its own unique vibe. Saturday night was true to form, with samples ranging from their own material to a few covers. The show was enhanced by their trademark sophisticated and colorful light show. They started promptly and dove right into it with “Le Blitz.” Their momentum steadily grew throughout the evening. Umphrey’s McGee sounded fantastic. Jake Cinninger delivered the powerful and edgy guitar riffs, which nicely complimented the guitar work of Brendan Bayliss. Ryan Stasik played bass. Kris Myers and Any Farag did the percussions. Joel Cummins was on keyboards. They harmonized beautifully with a rich and complex delivery that had elements of rock, blues, and metal. All show everyone was on their feet and dancing. By the second set the crowd was nearly as loud the band between songs. It was nearly 3 hours when they wrapped things up with their encore cover “Band on the Run.” The crowd certainly got their money’s worth and everyone left the show with a huge smile on their face!
